Description

As part of the Student Success Center & Disability Services, this position's role is to support student success by working with students to provide equal access and support to disabled students in a higher education setting.

The Disability Services Specialist works with students with various disabilities to ensure the College's legal obligation of accessibility is met. The specialist provides academic support and referral, evaluates, and assesses student needs using a variety of methods, coordinates the delivery of needed specialized services, monitors student progress, and serves as a resource for faculty and staff concerning disability accommodations.

The specialist works as a team member to serve over 400 students per semester. S/he may provide intake assessments on over 120 students per semester depending on the time of the year. There would be over 200 students with disabilities that are assigned to this person specifically to work with and ensure appropriate accommodations are provided in a timely and efficient manner.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's Degree.
  2. Minimum of one year of professional experience working with persons with disabilities which may include individuals with vision, hearing, and motor impairments, learning disabilities, emotionally impaired and/or health related disabilities.
  3. Strong computer background with one year of recent experience (within the last 2 years) using and/or teaching others to use adaptive technology.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  5. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively with staff, faculty, students, and the general public.
  7. Ability to work successfully in an environment without detailed direction; self-motivated.
  8. Excellent judgment skills in terms of interpersonal communications and ability to be flexible and adapt to changing work situations.
  9. Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule including evening hours.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Social Work, Rehabilitation or Counseling background.
  2. Experience presenting to large groups.
  3. Prior post-secondary education experience.
  4. Case management experience.
